In Elizabethan
times the British Navy was supplied with iron ore for it’s ships and cannons
from this area, an industry that is reflected in the ancient names
of the nearby lanes – Gun Lane, Foundry Road.
Newick Park was part of that history, with an open cast mine behind
the old house that created a long valley, transformed in Victorian
times to the green and leafy Dell Garden.
You can now walk from the top lane through vast Rhododendrons, Gunnera,
and Royal Ferns down to the lake where a rust red Chalybeate Spring
still bubbles up.
The huge Walled Garden is now also restored and provides the kitchen
with an abundance of most fruit and vegetables known to man, all
of which are organically produced.
Elsewhere we battle with the rabbits for
control of the flower borders – they
are currently winning – and the wonderful acreage of the park
continues to provide game for our table and exercise for our legs
